Choosing materials that age well

Brick, timber, concrete and metal all weather differently. Here is how we choose for the long term.

Think in decades

A material should look better at twenty years than at two. We ask how it weathers, how it is repaired and whether a matching piece will still exist.

Our short list

Brick and lime mortar for walls, hardwood or thermally treated timber for cladding, and exposed concrete where structure can be the finish.

The cheapest material is usually the one you never replace.
